Development
This game is about a ball that grows larger by eating food. Inspired a little bit by Beautiful Katamari, however you cannot eat buildings, only small squares. Initially there are obstacles that seem insurmountable, stairs that you are unable to climb. However, as the player 'eats' more and more, they find they are able to make it past steps that they were previously unable to climb over. This, I feel represents for me the concept of growth in quite an abstract and strange sense. The mechanics and graphics are both very simplistic (due to time restriction, last week and this week are both very busy for me, sorry), but I feel that I was amply able to express the theme I was writing toward. In the future I would like to expand the graphics and levels in the game (potentially it can go on forever, procedurally creating more steps to climb using multiplying scale and moving the position of the stairs as the player moves through the levels). For this demo I created only three levels in order to demonstrate what I wanted the mechanics to be. Each time the player's scale and speed are increased by a multiple of 1.2 when they collect a piece of food, and the stairs' Y scale is multiplied by 2. I can definitely expand this concept in the ways that I have detailed previously, and maybe make the level design more interesting, and also fix the camera offset to zoom out as the player expands.
