Development Log
The development process began with a basic prototype of the assembly mechanics for the player using triggers. I wanted to experiment with the 2D lighting system included with URP. I began with only the player and a freeform light meant to be a flashlight. Focusing on the level design was quite tough. Started with a sliding platform with spikes below (which has a confusing parent/scaling bug). I then fleshed out the rest of the level with a bunch of platforming, hoping to focus on implementing puzzles focusing on the player's current body state. Initially the player moves through a very small space, then acquires a part, assuring they can't get back through the space and must continue linearly through the level. Nothing forces the player to collect the parts, which could potentially be bad. I added a ton of 2D lighting and made the rest of the world very dark, in order to add more challenge to moving through the level. At some point I created a material that caused the platforms to be quite obscure, which I would redo in the next steps.
The playtesting occurred at a very basic state of the game, the first prototype iteration. The feedback was mostly around the player and how it was difficult to control initially, due to a parenting issue. The playtesters seemed to enjoy the lighting concepts and how they interacted with the world. They also enjoyed the fact that the player was able to build on themselves with the pieces, so we kept these two mechanics.
